The mission of this website is to present the ancestors of George
Tucker Sartwelle of Del Rio, Texas. There are four main variations of
the surname, but all variations originate with the immigrant ancestors,
Richard and Elizabeth Sawtel of Groton and Watertown Massachusetts. In
other words, virtually all Americans who are descendants of a Sawtel,
Sawtell, Sartwell or Sartwelle can trace their origins to Richard and
Elizabeth.
According to Edith Bartlett Sumner in Descendants of Thomas Farr of Harpswell, Maine and Ninety Allied Families (pp 236, 237), the surname
is also spelled Sawtelle, Sartell, Sawtle, Sattle, Satle and even Satley,
although these variations are less common today. Generally speaking, the
name, Sawtel, survived for only one generation in America. The second
generation added an "L", making the spelling, Sawtell. The fourth
generation spelled the name, Sartwell, and this is the predominant form
today. However, one line of the family (William Lovell Sartwelle -
seventh generation), added a silent "E", and the spelling became,
Sartwelle.
This website is organized into family sections. Each section contains
information related to a direct male descendant of Richard Sawtel.
Because the family is so large, the scope of these family sections is
limited to the direct line between Richard Sawtel and George Tucker
Sartwelle.
We sincerely hope that you enjoy your visit and that you are able to add
to your knowledge of the descendants of Richard and Elizabeth Sawtel.
This is truly a pioneer American family.
