John Sawtel
John Sawtel is the earliest Sawtel that can be identified as an ancestor. He was probably born about 1525 to 1535. His wife was named Agnes (last name unknown). He also used the alias Dolman, as his will indicates. He referred to his children as Dolman. There is no explanation for the use of this alias, which his children also used. This information according to: The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 126, No. 1, January 1972, pp 3-17, pp129-140. John and Agnes had at least four children:

John Sawtel, Jr.
John Sawtel, Jr., the son of John Sawtel, was born abt. 1570 in Aller, Somersetshire, England, and he died on December 20, 1622. John, Jr. married Agnes Pittard on October 9, 1599 in Aller. Agnes was born in January 1578/79, and she died on December 21, 1622. John, Jr. and Agnes had nine children:

- Robert Sawtel
- Henry Sawtel
- Elizabeth Sawtel (probably died as an infant)
- Richard Sawtel (immigrant ancestor of American Sartwelle family)

Important Note: There is no supporting documentation for John Sawtel, Sr. or John Sawtel, Jr. (grandfather and father of Richard Sawtel). There are numerous consistent references to the relationship in the historical records, but all are without source or supporting information. The same holds true for the ancestors of Elizabeth Pople.
